Oscar Garibay is the vice principal of Cesar Chavez High School. He started off as a teacher who taught Criminal Behavior, US History, Ethnic Studies, World History, AP US History, and Mexican American History. He’s been teaching for six years and this is his seventh year at Cesar Chavez High School.
Mr. Garibay attended Delta College for three years then after Delta he transferred to Sacramento State which led him to get his bachelor’s degree. He then went back to Sacramento State to get his teaching credentials and master’s degree. When he was a teacher, he represented the University of Reno, Nevada but now as vice principal, he represents Sacramento State.
Mr. Garibay went to Stagg High School for two years and then transferred to Linden High School to finish high school. He spent half of his high school years playing JV soccer and hanging out with friends.
The best advice that Mr. Garibay has received is, “Take care of yourself before you take care of others.’’ That was his goal since he was getting into the education field. He wants kids to get the education they deserve, but also wants them to be good and safe mentally. If he isn’t with the right mindset then it’s going to be hard trying to help others. That’s the main advice that he’s carried around with him and tried to implement.
Mr. Garibay says being vice principal is a pretty significant transition because when he was a teacher his goal was to support about 90 kids from three different classes and now, he is supporting 1000’s of students. He’s still trying to figure out the best way to support everyone, so he builds connections with random students and tries to support everyone with love and care.
