The NYC Climate Countdown Clock

The Time We Still Have Before It’s Too Late

In New York City’s Union Square there was recently a new addition. A group installed a countdown clock. This countdown clock basically tells the amount of time we have left to save our planet from a huge climate change that we may never be able to fix.

Ever heard of global warming? Here, on Earth, the atmosphere is increasing in its temperature caused by the increasing levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other things that pollute the air. With each passing second, more carbon dioxide, including other greenhouse gases, are being released into Earth’s atmosphere.

If greenhouse gases continue to increase, our planet will face a terrible climate change that could not be reversible. This will change everything on Earth – our environment, animals, plants, and humans. This climate change may kill us all.

According to a report in 2018, global warming may reach over normal temperatures here on Earth by 2030 at the least if we continue at our current rate. Because of higher temperatures, this may exponentially harm our ecosystems.

Gan Golan and Andrew Boyd created this clock to alert people to take actions to prevent global warming to take over Earth.  “This is our way to shout that number from the rooftops.” Golan said. “The world is literally counting on us.” Boyd also added, “This is arguably the most important number in the world and a monument is often how a society shows what’s important, what it elevates, what is at center stage.”

With the clock’s recent appearance, we have 7 years about 100 days to make preventions to avoid the irreversible climate change. Let’s make a change and save our planet!

(The message before the time’s appearance: “METRONOME FOR SERVING NEW YORK CITY FOR 20 YEARS. WELCOME TO THE CLIMATE CLOCK. THE EARTH HAS A DEADLINE. LET’S MAKE IT A LIFELINE. WE MUST #ActInTime. #ClimateClock. #ClimateWeek. WHAT IS OUR TIME WINDOW FOR BOLD CLIMATE ACTION? YRS. DAYS. HRS. MIN. SEC.”)
