Question 1: What made you interested in doing art? And when was the point where you wanted to do this as a career?
“I’ve been drawing since I was very young so it’s always been a thing. My parents are immigrants and were super supportive so I always wanted to do something related to art. Illustration wasn’t my first choice. I wanted to be an architect as a kid. I worked hard in high school to become one. Then I went to a college open house where they offered a 3rd animation degree and I was super interested in it so I signed up for this school but it was pretty difficult to get in. I got lucky and accepted and learned about 3D animation, concept art, modeling, etc.”
Question 2: How do you come up with ideas for original characters to draw? And how long does it usually take you to finish one art piece?
“It depends! I usually draw every day, so I have a personal sketchbook. For original characters, I usually have a mood board & references it is mostly the general essence of a drawing I want to convey before I start sketching different versions of a final concept. I choose the one I like the most, then I start rendering my drawings, it may vary from 5 hrs to 2-3 days.”
Question 3: Who are your biggest artistic influences?
“It would be Loish for sure and Noa Ikeda! I was a super fan of both of these artists back in 2016. It influenced me to start drawing with a tablet and taking my art to another level. Those are the major ones but I still have some others peeking from time to time.”
Question 4: Tell me about your favorite medium.
“My favorite medium is digital right now ever since 2018 but I was doing only traditional before really like gouache and watercolor.”
Question 5: Where do you find inspiration? And how do you overcome art blocks?
“I think we all go through it! But art blocks for me happen when I’m not stimulated by something around me. It’s when I start looking for new things to do, hobbies, new shows to watch, etc.. and it usually goes after. I started focusing on what I needed physically and mentally for myself. It’s how I get over an art block.”
Question 6: Describe how art is important to society.
“Well I don’t know if I’m the best person to answer but I can try. Technically we see art every day in our lives. It is a way to express yourself in a way that’s comfortable to artists, writers, painters, and even architects we are surrounded by. It’s something that’s created for sharing what the artist wants you to feel/think about themselves or even about the world. It’s in a way a form of communication but it shows how it is an art that maybe not a lot of people value but that some may resonate with and inspire.”
