This summer I decided to make a major change in my life and that was to delete all of my social media. I made this decision because I got into a cycle of not doing anything. Most of my days were spent laying in bed, wasting time scrolling through meaningless content.
Going on social media would only bring me entertainment for a little while before it was time to face the real world. Watching funny videos wasn’t going to help me with my future and I wasn’t going to use my free time to watch educational videos. I wanted to change the cycle I got stuck in and focus on the important parts of my life.
After I deleted it, I felt a huge sense of relief. Instead of feeling like I was missing out, I felt free. There were no notifications to stress over and no need to keep up with anything online because I was truly living in the moment. Being free from social media allowed me to focus on my goals and reconnect with myself. I picked up on hobbies that I forgot about such as reading and art.
People say they wouldn’t delete social media because they don’t want to miss out, but they don’t realize that they’re missing out on life itself because of social media.
One of the biggest changes I noticed was when I came back to school. Before the summer, I had gotten into a bad habit of being late every day. Now, without social media distracting me in the morning or at night, I’ve even started attending school earlier in the morning. Without it, I’m also much more focused throughout the day. In the past, I’d be distracted texting or playing games but now I stay on task and get school work done on time.
I told myself that it’d only be two months of no social media, but now that I’ve gone without it, I feel like I don’t need it anymore. I recommend people try deleting their social media if they’re struggling because it helped me get back on track.
