Super Bowl 53
Super Bowl 53 was the lowest scoring Super Bowl game of all time with a total score of 16 points. The championship game was a defensively fought game with a total of 8 Punts and one interception in the first half and a total of 3 points by half. This would be the second time Tom Brady and the Patriots have played the Rams in the Super Bowl with the first coming in 2002.
Both teams played very poorly during the first quarter of the game. Brady had just 84 passing yards with 1 interception which came on his first ball thrown during the opening quarter. Goff had a season low 17 passing yards with only 29 total yards for the Rams and 122 total yards for the Patriots through the first. The Patriots should have been up 3-0 going into the second quarter, but Stephen Gostkowski missed a normally automatic 46 yard kick.
The Rams defense managed to stall the Patriots drives, holding them to only a 42 yard field goal making the score 3-0 in the second quarter. Through the first 10 possessions of the game the drives consisted of: Interception, punt, missed field goal, punt, punt, punt, field goal, punt, punt, and punt. These were the stats going into the half. Brady had amassed 160 passing yards with 1 interception. Edelman had 93 receiving yard on 7 catches while Goff only managed 52 passing yards. The Rams only had 2 first downs during the first half with 57 total yards compare to the Patriots 12 first downs and 195 total yards.
The second half started much like the defensive game that it had already become. The first 4 drives in the 3rd quarter resulted in 4 punts. Then with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter the Rams put together a 10 play 42 yard drive to set up Greg Zuerlein for a 53 yard game tying field goal to make it 3-3. The Rams and Patriots exchanged drives ending in punts before Tom Brady and the Patriots started on the 31 yard line with a 5 play 69 yard drive including a huge 29 yard pass to Rob Gronkowski. The play setup the Patriots at the 2 yard line and a simple handoff to Sony Michel gave the Patriots the first touchdown of the game and the lead 10-3 with seven minutes remaining.
The Rams now faced an uphill battle in a defensive game needing a touchdown to tie the game up. With 4:24 left to play, on 2nd and 10 the Rams were at New England’s 27 yard line. Jared Goff sent a deep wobbling pass towards Brandin Cooks, but into the hands of Stephon Gilmore. Tom Brady and the Patriots then went on a 9 play 67 yard drive to set up Stephen Gostkowski for a 41 yard field goal and a two score lead at 13-3. The Rams were left with one last chance to comeback in the game, but the Goff led drive ending in Greg Zuerlein miss from 48 yards sealing the sixth Super Bowl victory for Tom Brady and the Patriots.
The Patriots won Super Bowl 53 and Tom Brady now has is 6th Super Bowl ring in nine Superbowl appearances. Julian Edelman was the Super Bowl MVP with 141 yards on 10 catches. This would be the second time Tom Brady beat the Rams in the Super Bowl. The Patriots dynasty started with the Rams and it continues on through the Rams. This game went down in history as the lowest scoring Super bowl ever in a New England victory 13-3.
