The time is finally here, it’s Super Bowl season. Before my game preview of Super Bowl 58, I’m going to do a Team Comparison. I’ll be using their listed starters that can be found on ESPN.
Quarterback: Patrick Mahomes vs Brock Purdy: These 2 quarterbacks have been on fire all season long but when it was playoff time Brock looked shaky at the start of games he comes up when he’s needed but this is Patrick Mahomes who has won 2 Super Bowls and 2 MVP’s so I give the edge to Kansas City in this position battle but this is in no disrespect to Brock Purdy, he just has to go against the league’s best quarterback. Winner: Kansas City Chiefs
Running Back: Isiah Pacheco vs Christian McCaffrey: Christian McCaffrey is an MVP and he’s going against a defense that allows 113 rushing yards on average in the playoffs this year. Isaiah Pacheco is good but he’s going up against an MVP-caliber player. so I have to give the edge to San Francisco in this matchup. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
Fullback: Kyle Juszczyk: Kansas City has no active fullbacks so this will automatically go to the 49ers. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
Wide Receiver 1: Rashee Rice vs Deebo Samuel: Rashee Rice has been this team’s leading receiver not named Travis Kelce, but Deebo Samuel has been a proven offensive weapon and has this Chiefs passing defense has given up 213 passing yards per game in the playoffs so this matchup goes to San Francisco. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
Wide Receiver 2: Justin Watson vs Brandon Aiyuk: Brandon Aiyuk is the 49ers leading receiver and is listed as a WR2. In the conference championship game, he had an electric catch that shifted the momentum of the game and made the comeback possible for the 49ers. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
Wide Receiver 3: Marquez Valdes-Scantling vs Jauan Jennings: MVS has had drop problems all season long but he did have a catch on 3rd down in the conference championship game against Baltimore that iced the game. As for Jauan Jennings, he also had a crucial catch on third down where he climbed the ladder to convert and Jennings’s is one of the best run-blocking WRs. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
Tight End: Travis Kelce vs George Kittle: This is one of the hardest matchups in this game as Travis Kelce is Mahomes’ go-to guy whenever he’s in doubt and has 3 touchdowns in the playoffs so far. As for Kittle, he’s one of the hardest TEs to bring down when he has the ball in his hands and is one of the best run blockers as well. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
Offensive Line: Jawaan Taylor, Donavan Smith Joe Thuney, Trey Smith, And Creed Humphrey vs Trent Williams and Colton McKivitz Jon Feliciano, Aaron Banks, and Jake Brendel: Kansas City’s offensive line has allowed 2 sacks all playoffs which came against Baltimore but that was without All-Pro Guard Joe Thuney meanwhile the Niners have allowed 3 sacks during the playoffs with all the starters. Winner: Kansas City Chiefs
That was the starting offense now let’s take a look at the defensive side of the ball.
Defensive ends: George Karlaftis and Mike Danna vs Nick Bosa and Chase Young: Mike Danna has not had a sack all playoffs neither has San Francisco’s Chase Young whom many Niner fans question his lack of effort as he was acquired during this year’s trade deadline and has only 2.5 sacks which is way below expectations. Let’s look at their teammates who look way better as George Karlaftis has 2.5 sacks this playoffs alone while Nick Bosa has 2 sacks this playoffs all coming against Detroit. This one is a tough matchup to decide but I’m going with San Francisco. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
Defensive Tackles: Chris Jones and Neil Farrell vs Arik Armstead and Javon Hargrave: Chris Jones this season has been an All-Pro even though the stats don’t show it during the playoffs he has forced a fumble against Buffalo. His teammate Neil Farrell didn’t record any stats this playoffs due to only playing in one game against Baltimore. For San Francisco, Javon Hargrave had 4 total tackles against the Lions and Arik Armstead has had 5 total tackles with a crucial fumble recovery in the NFC Championship to further the momentum for the 49ers to pull off the comeback. Kansas City Takes this one. Winner: Kansas City Chiefs
Linebackers: Willie Gay, Nick Bolton, and Drue Tranquill vs Dre Greenlaw, Fred Warner, and Oren Burks: Willie Gay has played in only 2 games this playoffs missing the AFC Championship, and has recorded 5 tackles and 1 pass deflection. Nick Bolton is one of the rising linebackers in the league and is the best of the bunch on his team having 27 tackles and 1 pass deflection this playoffs. Drue Tranquill this postseason has 19 total tackles. On to San Francisco’s linebacker core headlined by Fred Warner who this season was a unanimous All-Pro this year in the playoffs has had 20 total tackles and 1 pass deflection meanwhile his teammate Dre Greenlaw has had 2 interceptions with 19 total tackles and Oren Burks with 3 total tackles. Although Kansas City’s linebackers are good they’re not good enough as San Francisco’s top 2 linebackers are one of the best tandems in the league. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
Cornerbacks: L’Jaruis Sneed and Trent McDuffie vs Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir: Trent Mcduffie is one of the best slot cornerbacks in the league this year earning an All-Pro while L’Jaruis Sneed has allowed a passer rating of 56.2 when targeted. San Francisco’s Charvarius Ward has been an All-Pro this year as well with 5 interceptions on the season. Deommodore Lenoir has been lockdown this playoffs only allowing 20 yards between both games against Green Bay and Detroit. This is another tough one but if I had to pick one I’d say Niners take this one again. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
Safeties: Justin Reed and Mike Edwards vs Ji’Ayir Brown and Tashaun Gibson: Justin Reed this playoffs has 18 combined tackles with only allowing 3 completions and a sack. Mike Edwards has 5 combined tackles with 1 interception. The safeties for the 49ers have been serviceable as Tashaun Gibson has 9 combined tackles and forced a fumble against Detroit that same one Arik Armstead recovered. Ji’Ayir Brown has 5 combined tackles but he only played against Detroit. I’d say Kansas wins this one: Winner: Kansas City Chiefs
That was the defense but now let’s take a look at the Special Teams.
Kicker: Harrison Butker vs Jake Moody: Harrison Butker has not missed a field goal or extra point this playoffs but has missed 2 field goals. Jake Moody has not been money as he has missed a kick in each game of the playoffs. I think I’d rather pick Butker than Moody. Winner: Kansas City Chiefs
Punter: Tommy Townsend vs Mitch Wishnowsky: Tommy Townsend has an average of 46.1 yards per punt and has downed 2 inside the 20 line of the opponent this season. Mitch Wishnowsky has an average of 47 yards per punt on the dot while also downing 2 inside the 20 of the opponent. I think I’d rather take the dude who has an average of 47 yards per punt. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
Kick Returner: Richie James vs Ray-Ray McCloud: Richie James has an average of 20.8 yards per kick return this season and an average of 10 per punt return and has 2 fumbles on punts this year. Ray-Ray McCloud has an average of 22.5 yards per kick return and an average of 8.5 yards per return on punts and has 1 fumble on a return this season. I have to give this to San Francisco as McCloud has one less fumble than Richie James. Winner: San Francisco 49ers
