J.J McCarthy is a Quarterback prospect coming out of the University of Michigan who is entering the NFL Draft. He was once a projected early second/late first-round pick, but his Draft stock has gone up ever since this prior college football season ended with him winning the National Championship.  

Why is that?

His traits, the way he makes plays when everything breaks down, his ability to scramble, his age, and his leadership are a good start. A good portion of the quarterbacks in this NFL draft are older than teams would like for example Michael Penix Jr. who is another QB who is going to be drafted is going to be 24 entering this NFL season meanwhile McCarthy will be 21 years old.   

Why are those traits so valuable? 

Those traits are so valuable because they’re harder to defend. The past 2 MVPs (Lamar Jackson & Patrick Mahomes) have the traits that J.J. possesses. Those traits are very valuable and are harder to game plan against than someone who doesn’t have them.   

If he’s so good why doesn’t he have the stats?

Michigan didn’t throw the ball that much compared to other teams. Michigan ran a spread power pro style which resulted in an average rushing 37.5 attempts per game & 24.1 passing attempts while for example the national champion runner-up Washington Huskies averaged 38.3 passing attempts & 27.4 rushing attempts.
