This interview took place on October 16th, 2024 (after the bye week) before the Ceaser Chavez Titans won the SJAA league championship, so a couple of questions here are outdated.
What Made you start coaching here at Chavez?
Coach Graves was one of my coaches at Delta College. I wanted to get into coaching, but I didn’t want to coach back home (Eslcalon), So Coach Graves helped me find my place here.
How would you describe your first season coaching at Chavez?
I love it. This has been a life-changing experience for me just because I’ve always wanted to coach. For the last two years, I separated myself from football. Now that I’m back on the football scene, it’s been a fantastic experience. I’m one of the youngest coaches on the staff, so I’m always getting coached by the other coaches, and I take it to heart.
The team is 5-2 (5-0 in league). How much is the Offensive line responsible for its success?
I believe it’s one of the biggest factors in our winning. If our guys don’t do what they do every game, then we don’t have anything else happen in other spots. Yes, we’re gifted at Quarterback, Wide Receiver, and Running Back, but none of that goes together without a good Offensive line. In college, I was on a team like this but with a terrible offensive line, and we didn’t do much.
You do standup comedy. Is there a time when a joke bombed?
No, I didn’t have a joke that bombed, except for the first time I went up. I got on stage with only an outline of what I wanted to talk about and no jokes, and I was on stage for a minute and a half longer than I was supposed to be.
You used to travel a lot in your old job. What did you take from that job and implement in your life?
My last job was as a writer and coordinator for someone who speaks in front of colleges and state houses. One time, she spoke in front of Congress. It was demanding in terms of traveling and being away from home, but I gained a lot of independence from that job.
Do you have any Pregame rituals?
I keep a penny in my left shoe, face up. Ever since I was a kid, I’d keep a penny on my bed and throw it on the ground every morning. If it were headed, I’d keep it as a lucky penny; if not, I’d kick it until it was headed.
There were a lot of holding calls in the last game against West. How do you plan to respond to that?
We need to be more disciplined in our blocking. We were going into run blocks straight-armed instead of keeping defenders closer to our chest, and we will fix that this week.
What did you do to improve the offensive line during the bye week?
I didn’t have much time with the group as we only had two practices. However, I watch many films and coaching videos related to the techniques we use here, and I try to improve my craft so that I’m not regurgitating the same things.
